  4.        Welcome to MCP Art Appeal README FILE.  Before installing the CD-ROM 
  5.        version of Art Appeal,  please take the time to read this file.

  7. I.  Introduction
  8.  
  9.   Thank you for purchasing Art Appeal's Volume 1, Business or Art Appeal's 
  10.   Volume 2, Government & Industry or Art Appeal's Volume 3, Education and 
  11.   Leisure.  Each CD-ROM contains over 1200 highly detailed, artist-drawn 
  12.   original clip art images in both CGM and WMF formats, in full color and 
  13.   high-contrast grey-scale.  MCP is dedicated to providing you with the 
  14.   highest quality and most creative business art available.  Our images are 
  15.   in the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) format (ANSI standard X3.122), 
  16.   which is usable with most of the popular productivity software applications 
  17.   for MS-DOS and Windows platforsm as well as Windows Metafile format (WMF) 
  18.   which is Window's native internal file format with standard Windows 3.0 WMF 
  19.   with placeable headers.  Both of the formats are either full color or full 
  20.   grey-scale shading richly detailed vector art files.  This means that the 
  21.   quality is maintained when POSITIONING, SIZING, or MODIFYING the images.  
  22.   Text, size, and color can also be modified depending upon the capabilities 
  23.   of the software application that you are using.

  25. USE ART APPEAL WITH MANY SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
  26.  
  27.   Art Appeal's images are software dependent.  That means they must be used 
  28.   in conjunction with a software application which imports either CGM or WMF 
  29.   files. Since Art Appeal's images are compatible with any DOS or Windows 
  30.   application that accepts the CGM or WMF format, simply consult your 
  31.   application manual for instructions on importing graphics.  Most Windows 
  32.   applications that support CGM or WMF art work import them using FILE/IMPORT 
  33.   or FILE/PLACE.  Usually, applications compatible with CGM or WMF files 
  34.   import them easily without any conversion requirements, with the proper 
  35.   aspect ratio (proportion), and with no background.  Some, however, require 
  36.   that you install a CGM or WMF Import Filter, or adjust the aspect ratio 
  37.   after the file has been imported.  If you get an error message such as 
  38.   "Unrecognized File Type" or if your application will not list the files in 
  39.   the clip art directory, it usually means that the CGM or WMF filter has not 
  40.   yet been installed.

  42.   The CGM or WMF filter for your application can be installed at any time 
  43.   from the disks that came with your application and by following the 
  44.   software application instructions.  The CGM or WMF filter is provided by 
  45.   the application manufacturer and is included in your software application; 
  46.   it is not available from Art Appeal.  When asked what to install, select 
  47.   "Filters only".  When asked which filter, select "CGM" or "Computer Graphics 
  48.   Metafile" and "WMF" or Window Metafile".  Your application program will 
  49.   then tell you which diskette is required.  Insert the designated diskette 
  50.   from your application, install the filter, Exit the Setup Program and 
  51.   restart your applications.  For further instruction, see your user's manual 
  52.   for the application with which you are working.

  54.   At this time, we know of only two programs that might not accept the 
  55.   converted WMF files:  Ventura and Corel 2.0.  If you want to use our images 
  56.   in these programs, choose the CGM file format instead of the WMF file format.

  58. If You Need Help
  59.  
  60.   If you require help importing your CGM or WMF files into your application, 
  61.   call the technical support number of that particular manufacturer.  If you 
  62.   require assistance with a particular image or with output quality, you can 
  63.   call MCP.  Customer Support is available by calling 1-900-CALL CLIP 
  64.   (255-5254).  This is a pay-by-the-minute service that costs $2.00 for each 
  65.   minute.  The service is available from 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM, Eastern time, 
  66.   Monday through Friday.  To use this service you must be 18 years or older, 
  67.   or have the permission of your parents.  In the event you experience a 
  68.   problem with this service, please call (305) 967-8233 for assistance.

  71. II.  The Images
  72.  
  73.   Each volume contains images in CGM color, CGM grey-scale, WMF color and WMF 
  74.   grey-scale.  To access the images for the CGM Color, select one of the sub-
  75.   directories located off the root  directory of the CD-ROM.  For example, if 
  76.   you want to choose the BORDERS category, select x:\BORDERS.  This will give 
  77.   you access to 195 files in CGM format and in color for you to use in your 
  78.   document or spreadsheet.

  80.   Regardless of which format you choose to use, the various image directory 
  81.   names are identical to those listed here.  Each set of directories is 
  82.   grouped as subdirectories relating to the specified format as follows:

  84.     _WMFGS  --  WMF grey scale
  85.  
  86.     _WMFCL  --  WMF color
  87.  
  88.     _CGMGS  --  CGM grey scale
  89.  
  90.   If you want to choose an image from the agriculture category in the WMF 
  91.   format and in grey scale, select  X:\_WMFGS\AGRICULT.

  94. Read Only Status
  95.  
  96.   All images are set to read only.   This may affect you depending on how you 
  97.   plan to use your Art Appeal images.  Most users have two choices:
  98.  
  99.     1. They use the images directly from the CD-ROM.  This is possible 
  100.        because they are decompressed.  OR 
  101.  
  102.     2. They copy the images from the CD-ROM to a local hard drive or 
  103.        floppy diskette.
  104.  
  105.   If you use the copy command or a file management program to copy the images 
  106.   and you want to edit the images, you must remove the "read only" attribute 
  107.   (Refer to your DOS manual under - ATTRIB).

  181. III.  Graphics Browser for Windows
  182.  
  183.     
  184.   The Art Appeal Browser is designed to help the user view and locate images 
  185.   by category using a keyword search.  This utility can be run only within 
  186.   Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher with the Windows VGA driver installed.
  187.   
  188.   With the Browser, you can view and locate related images provided in this 
  189.   Art Appeal product (using the pre-built catalog).  You can also use it to 
  190.   build your own libraries of images in a variety of file formats and other 
  191.   clip art collections, in addition to your Art Appeal images.  This can be 
  192.   especially useful if you have regular use for a particular set of graphics.

  195.   In order to view images in the Browser, a "catalog" must first be created.  
  196.   A catalog is simply a user-designated library or group of images.  When 
  197.   created, the catalog of images can be viewed in thumbnail (raster) size, 
  198.   along with additional information designated by the user.

  201.   For maximum use of this program, we recommend you read the complete Browser 
  202.   manual which is provided on-line.  You can read or print the entire manual 
  203.   while in Microsoft Windows.  To access the on-line manual, simply double-
  204.   click on the User Manual icon.

  207.   To use this program, first start Windows. The Program Manager will open.  
  208.   The following are the installation steps for the on-line Browser.
  209.  
  210.  
  211.     1.  From File Manager select the File Menu, Run, and 
  212.         Type D:\catalogs\Setup. Then, Click the OK button. 
  213.  
  214.     2.  Type in your Registration information. Click the OK button.
  215.  
  216.     3.  Install Pre-Built Catalogs?  Select Yes or No.
  217.  
  218.         If NO is selected:
  219.            A.  Enter the Directory where you want to install the Browser                                 
  220.            (Default C:\MCP).
  221.            B.  Click on the Continue button to proceed with installation.
  222.  
  223.         If YES is selected:
  224.            A.  Select Catalogs you would like to install ( [X] Yes [  ] No ).
  225.            B.  Toggle option box for Catalogs to install (.CGM , .WMF or                                
  226.            Use catalogs on CD-ROM [Read-only] ).

  228.            Note: You can install both Format Catalogs at the same                                 
  229.            time.
  230.  
  231.            C.  Click Option box to indicate if your Clip Art is to be 
  232.            located on the CD-ROM ( [X] Yes [  ] No ).
  233.            D.  Enter the Directory where you want to install the Browser                                
  234.            (Default C:\MCP)
  235.            E.  Click on the Continue button to proceed with installation.

  238.     4.  At this point, determine if you want to install all the catalogs 
  239.         or if you want to choose individual and/or a group of catalogs.
  240.  
  241.         If you opt for a full Installation of one or both formats 
  242.         (.CGM or .WMF):
  243.             A.  Highlight Select All.
  244.             B.  Click on the Copy To button to move all Catalogs 
  245.                 to the Catalogs To Install window.
  246.             C.  Click the OK button to continue installation. 
  247.  
  248.         If you want to customize the catalog installation
  249.             A.  Highlight individual directories to install.
  250.             B.  Click Copy To button to move catalogs to the 
  251.                 Catalogs To Install window.
  252.             C.  After all selections have been made, Click on 
  253.                 the OK button to continue installation.
